What’s the best sculpting materials (for fantasy animal design, i.e. for a movie or something)?
Just wondering if anyone could recommend a sculpting material that most proffessionals would use in concept design etc. Fist thing I found on the internet was Super Sculpey, would that be the winner? Or are there better, more professional, durable and less ‘brittlle’ subtances? I really need something that allows for fine detail and can be painted over with acrylics after effectively.
If it’s any help I’m doing an A level project on fantasy creature creation for the ‘next generation’ of game and movie design. I am going to attempt 3D modelling with a nice bit of free software called ‘Blender’ but it would be good to sculpt something as a back up, esecially since the first is very complicated.
I am not sure what material professionals use but when it comes to polymer clays I have used several brands over the years …the Super Sculpey you mentioned above is what many beginners seem to start out with…it is an extremely soft clay the more you work with it the softer it gets ..which for me made it harder to work with (that probably didn’t make sense ..sorry it is late here) ..I have try about all the polymer clays such as cernit ,fimo,promat ..these clays are all extreme hard —its a job to get them malleable especially the cernit..but they are a strong clay when cured….The polymer I like the best is Prosculpt ..not to soft not to hard ..if you want to see what kind detail you can achieve with this clay check this link out http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290375740252&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
ok, sorry my mind is getting ready to shut down (late) ..the one thing about polymer clays is it is important to follow the baking instructions ..if not baked long enough the clay will break easily ..if it is baked to long the clay will become brittle and break easily….this goes for all the clays I mentioned above…one more thing all these clays can be painted with acrylics but you will need to use something to seal the paint with or the paint can and will rub off….many people are using a new product call genesis heat oil paint ..a small amount of this paint goes a long way ..and has the effect of making a scupture look more realistic like the one in the link above…..these paints can be a bit costly but there are some people on ebay that sells sample sizes really reasonable..if you decide you would like to try them….
